Four Years

Four years ago this month I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Every October the emotional and physical memories come back. I swear I have twinges and pains that make me think something is wrong again. So I get all anxious about my annual checkups.

Probably there is nothing to worry about! I’ve been perfectly fine since my surgery in 2008. What a devastating time that was though. I ache for women I meet who are going through that chemo / radiation routine; who have to face the decisions that come along with breast cancer.

My first surgeon told me over the phone that I would have to have a mastectomy and when I got hysterical he said he did have a new associate who did “breast preservation” surgery. She was awesomely wonderful! I had a lumpectomy, losing about 1/3 of my breast. No big deal.

I am proud of my Granddaughter Hilary for her involvement in October Breast Cancer Awareness and “Think Pink”. This is the cause and the charity that her sorority focuses on all year. Recently the girls linked up with the San Diego Chargers at a game promoting breast cancer awareness. What an awesome experience for them πŸ™‚Β  Here’s Renee and Tom with me after they walk in a Komen Race for the Cure in 2009.

And here’s my Hilly today after walking in the same race…all decked out in Pink accessories!

I’m looking forward to just one more year of a daily pill and 6 month checkups!…and am so thankful for the wonderful doctors I had and the loving support of my family.
