Saturday Evening Excitement
We were just watching the end of "Twins" when we heard a crowd of people running through our yard shouting "fire"! We are parked on a bluff looking down on the lake and another campground. We ran out and sure enough the hill below us was in flames and the wind was moving the fire along quickly.
Jim to the rescue! We hooked up a couple of hoses and started spraying. Another couple did the same while dozens of other campers watched and gave advice!
Within 10 minutes the LA Fire Dept arrived with about 6 trucks. They pulled hoses from the pumpers and sprayed water and foam on the fire. It was pretty much out in about 15 minutes.
About a dozen firefighters were down the hill spraying and hacking away at the burning brush. Then another crew in orange jumpsuits arrived. This was the inmate crew that had to dig a dirt ring around the fire. By the time it was getting dark their job was done. We thanked as many of them as we could...what a job!...to go racing into a fire.
The Fire Dept Helicopter that drops flame retardant and water circled by a few times but by then the fire was truly under control.
Our neighbor had seen a couple of kids playing around down the hill and then running away shouting "let's get out of here"....probably the firestarters. We had planned to have a campfire in our new little outdoor firepit...but after this excitement it didn't seem appropriate!
