A Day at Epcot

P2230014_edited.gif

Our first good decision was to go to Epcot for the afternoon and evening, a decision guided by the heat and my desire to see the closing fireworks show. Our first adventure was the "ride" that takes you through the sphere. The theme is communications through time so you travel on a track in the dark passing by animatronic scenes of cave men, Greek orators, early phone operators and families around TVs. The animatronics were great...I was sure that one cave man was live...it was the blinking eyes that got me!

The best ride of all was the Mission to Mars where we "rode" a shuttle into space, around the moon and landed on Mars...all via simulation and film. The special effects were astounding! Jim was the Commander, I was the Engineer and another couple played other roles. Of course we really did not have to do anything for real, but you get pretty involved in the concept. The effect of the G forces and the centrifical spinning both sort of disoriented me. I was sure glad we had not eaten anything before going aboard.

We were able to visit many of the attractions and were especially intrigued by the Turtle Talk show in the Living Sea. We sat in a theater where the MC had all the little kids sit on the floor in front. A huge screen showed an undersea scene. A turtle from one of the Disney movies appeared and started talking and got the audience involved in responding. Then the MC had kids asking the turtle questions and the turtle responded appropriately, like live, in both words and actions. How they got this animated turtle to interact in realtime was wonderful! We have some ideas how this happens....but of course they don't share that info with you.

Here are some scenes from the Living Sea...

I was delighted with the kids playing in the water spouts...

Our second good decision was to eat dinner early so we were among the first guests at Chefes de France where we enjoyed a salmon tartare appetizer, grouper with raviolis and roast duck with brandied cherry sauce, accompanied by Cote de Rhone wine and topped with creme brulee and profiteroles!!! Our server, Christophe, was from Paris working here for a year. We asked why he'd come to America and he exclaimed, "why to see everything...Chicago, Washington." We shared a bit of our lifestyle with him and encouraged him to go west of the Mississippi!

We had no clue it would rain so we sat out the shower in the Italian village and then watched the closing fireworks. A day at Epcot is not cheap....$125 for two for entrance tickets plus food and souvenirs. We overheard one dad say to his family..."here we are on a $5000 vacation and you spend time coloring pictures in books!" When we left and watched thousands of people stream out of the park I could only think $$$$$60 per person! But it was a wonderful day, a great escape!

On the Move

Woohoo...after 2.5 months we are on the move again. Today was an exciting move day. Got up early..7:30...and packed it in. We had an appointment in Kissimmee FL at Camping World for an oil change...so plenty of time. All set so we pull out and the new mud flapper in the rear was dragging on the ground. We sort of thought that might happen but it was hard to tell exactly how it would fall. Jim and our neighbor Wayne (thanks) installed it on Saturday. So under the coach goes the big guy to unhook the flapper which is 8' long and about 16" high. Then we had to figure out where to put it.

So got that tacken care of and realized that we had not put all the tow bar equipment on the car in preparation for moving...so another half hour goes by!

Finally we move out. This RV park was in the boonies, with little shopping around, country roads and slow pace. So we mosey on down the 50 to 27 to 192 into the Orlando/Kissimmee area. Whew...culture shock! Incredible traffic. Took us an hour to go 10 miles. State 192 is a main drag of restaurants, shops and tourist attractions for this area. So with just minutes to spare we pulled into Camping World and in addition to the oil change we got 5" cut off the flapper so it can go back on.

After stopping to shop at a Target Superstore (wonderful grocery selection) we pulled into our KOA site and found ourselves in vacationland with kids and campfires. Quite a change from our geezer park. So we plan to visit Epcot Center, dine at an "all you can eat" seafood place and put the flapper back on.

Celebrating

3 for 1 celebration!! Late birthday, early Valentine's and LIFE!! We went to Tampa and saw a matinee of The Aviator with Leo DiCaprio. I loved it. Jim would probably prefer to wait for the DVD but he humors me and he enjoyed it too. Leo did a wonderful job in the lead role...and now we are motivated to read more about Hughes and his planes.

We had margaritas and coconut shrimp at Red Lobster...so rich we couldn't eat it all. The weather was perfect. I really did not expect to like Florida weather but it is not as humid as I thought it would be. Today was perfect 72 degrees, clear sky, light wind....and I'm smilin'! I have not been smiling much lately and the muscles had almost forgotten what to do. But today I'm smiling at everyone.

Waiting

Waiting is the shi....excuse me ....pits!!! I had outpatient surgery on 1/31 to remove a tumor. The doc thought it looked like a fibroid, so I was really not too worried. However, after surgery he was concerned and the initial reading was cancer. Now I understand on a very personal level how deadly that word rings.

However, after 11 days and 3 opinions...all agree it is benign. CAT scans are normal. I'm healthy!! OH HAPPY DAY!

Usually I'm a very positive person but this really had me down. I painted all the worst scenarios in my mind. My kids and friends told me to BREATHE...watch movies, read, walk or have a drink. But in the dark of night I found what helped me sleep was to sing. There's that music again! And the best song of all was "pack up all my cares and woes, here I go, feeling low...bye, bye, blackbird"...(listen to Joe Cocker sing that on Sleepless in Seattle soundtrack). And yesterday morning I woke up hearing Glen Yarbrough singing "It's Gonna Be Fine".

OK...so that's over and life begins again. One thing I learned is that I love this life style. I had no sorry or regretful feelings about being in our motorhome while this was going on. I feared being tied down to a doctor, hospital, treatment that would keep us from traveling. So soon we'll be filling in those states on the door map!!!
